GUITARISTS PRESENTED
Spring 2011 - Fall 2012
2019 ended with 12 gigs in December—
ranging from a solo concert for Groupmuse to Kaiser Permanente holiday celebrations for staff, the Bacchus House Holidays job and concert for residents at my late friend Richard Cream’s Skilled Nursing Facility. He passed away in October and was a lifelong friend.

The rest of the year had solo concerts and all kinds of solo performances, private and group teaching and a couple of concerts with my Flute & Guitar Duo partner Francesca Anderson.

The big news career-wise was retiring from my work as a concert promoter-presenter, mainly with Sacramento Guitar Society. I left the Board and handed the baton to remaining board members. This was a major change in my professional career, leaving more time for the other two jobs — teaching and performing — and family time.

The last SGS Event set up in 2019 was in October, with Mimi Fox and Mary Flower at the Harris Center in Folsom. A titan in the jazz world, Mimi started out on acoustic guitar and was a fan of Segovia before switching all her energy to jazz, becoming the greatest female jazz guitarist I know of. She recently switched back to acoustic guitar, though staying in the jazz and blues lanes. Mary is a simply incredible acoustic blues guitarist, and she'd never worked with Mimi before our concert. It turned out to be a fantastic match as the two performed both an outreach at Vista del Lago High School and the Harris Center 200-seat venue. Both they and the audience were super-happy with the programs.

That is the legacy of the SGS guitar series so far - people arrive with little or no familiarity with the artists and leave grateful for the experience. SGS has been a trustworthy source of high level guitar artistry, and I pass the baton on with pride. Here's a link to the concerts history.

Getting through my sixties physically has been pretty demanding - but yoga has helped quite a bit along with bi-weekly massages. It's an easy drive to the Senior Center for yoga twice a week. The yoga students are a positive bunch, and we go out Tuesday mornings for coffee together after class.

The yoga teacher is Donna Rixmann, delightful human and the source of a wealth of rare knowledge of Ayurvedic health on top of her vast yoga training. She is a Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner and offers workshops and private counseling in both fields.

As a professional musician, you encounter all kinds of performing situations. There are formal concerts, solo and ensemble, and there are gigs where you clearly are not what the draw is. I'm good with either. There is a place for just simply relaxing music for the purpose of enhancing fine dining or a reception. A necessity for success in all these settings is flexibility in your repertoire. Of course in December you have to break out the Christmas book, for weddings it's another set of appropriate music, for concerts it's all over the place... So you just gear up for the next event and try to stay ahead.

Folsom lake Symphony Principal Flute Francesca Anderson and I did a pair of summer concerts, one indoors and one outdoors. I always love playing with her and enjoying her "super power" onstage - verbal introductions to the music followed up by virtuosic playing, We make a good team. We have also enjoyed decades together since attending San Jose State University together.  Our concerts include a wide range of styles and periods, solos for both instruments, and a special section demonstrating the various members of the flute family. Francesca owns a pair of Native American flutes including one wooden flute with a double bore - one pipe is a drone and the other is a pentatonic scale.

Another summer event in 2019 was a backyard concert with the great Michael Chapdelaine here at our house. I opened for him, and as always, her pretty much blew everyone's minds with his talent. Every artist is unique, and MC is more unique than most. He has a gift for performing in a very inclusive way, sharing a lot about himself and his life as he introduces his very special arrangements. As a former GFA Winner, he's at ease with the most difficult classical pieces of Tarrega, Albeni, Couperin, Barrios, Dyens, etc., and pop covers from the Beatles to contemporary artists. There's nothing like a back yard hang with Chapdelaine and food and drinks on a Sunday afternoon.

Pictured to the right is a snapshot taken by our son Craig just before a dinner party we hosted broke up. Sadly, Kevin succumbed to cancer a few days before this writing. It is representative of all too many of our relatives, friends and acquaintances who have gone in the last couple of years. Alison's father Jim passed in August at the age of 93. I had a close friend growing up that I've stayed in touch with, and he died in October. Everyone agrees the message is a greater appreciation of the here and now.

A funny thing happened to the last Groupmuse I did. It was my fourth for the social network based on classical concerts in living rooms. It's very big in New York City - you can find one every night. Here, not so much, but it's growing. So above you can see the folks who attended the Sacramento Groupmuse at my house. So I performed and Alison and hosted. The crazy thing is that it was originally to hosted by a host in the Cambridge/Boston area. Her address - 23 Sacramento Place - generated a concert listing to Sacramento, California members and musicians. Probably an error in the original information fields. But it was full to the limit of how may she had room for - sold out, in other words - and I wasn't completely clear on her address. It wasn't showing up in Sacramento on Google maps. It wasn't until I got her on the phone the night before that we discovered we were on opposite sides of the country! The only solution was to hold it here and back up the start time to allow for travel from Sacramento to Folsom.
