Roest-Gilewitz Tour
Summer 2016

What a delight it was go on a six day, eleven event, five county road trip with the wonderful Florida-based steel-string guitarist, Richard Gilewitz!

I had presented Richard twice before, ten years ago in a house concert and eight years ago at Lick Observatory. It was time for him to return! I landed us another couple concerts in driving distance and it was just a matter of filling the other days from August 11-through the 16th. So our tour T-shirts would have read:

2016 Roest-Gilewitz Tour (RG would probably prefer "Gilewitz-Roest Tour")
Aug. 11 Folsom - Nicholson Music Co.
Aug. 12 Layayete - Mighty Fine Guitars
Aug. 13 Lick Observatory
Aug. 14 Roseville - The Strum Shop
Aug, 15 Yuba City - Pete's Music Center, Yuba City High School, River Valley School
Aug. 16 Lincoln - Kilaga Springs Resort at Sun City Lincoln Hills

I was glad to have a tune up solo concert at the Library in my home town a few days ahead of Richard's arrival to road-test my repertoire. Since Richard plays the 12-string including slide and the 6-string acoustic, and I play the nylon string classical, the audiences got a good spread of sounds and styles throughout the night. Gilewitz has an uncanny ability to entertain - lightning chops, quick wit, zany humor and entertaining tales of the road. Sometimes the tour was easy and sometimes not so much. It was so hot Monday in Yuba City, I saw a dog chasing a cat and they were both walking. Richard joked that he left Florida to get away from the heat.

Richard is very generous with his audiences and hosts, and he typically gives out goodies from his three major sponsors, L.R. Baggs, D'Addario and Shubb, plus from his seven CDs.

Once again, my dear friend Herb Tanimoto came up for the sold out Lick concert to produce the sound amplification and spend the night on the mountain, something only the artists are invited to do.

Richard used a slide on the 12-string and had the audience laughing at his stories from start to finish. With a huge range of moods and styles, he holds his audiences enchanted throughout. Almost as soon as he returned to Florida he was traveling again. I always learn a lot from working with other guitarists, especially such a veteran of the road as Gilewitz.

As SGS Artistic Director, I produced this guitar orchestra rehearsal for the August meeting, then an Open Stage after the rehearsal - very gratifying to see it come together! This is the The Clara Auditorium in Midtown Sacramento. Sixteen guitarists follow the baton of Sean O'Connor.
It's the little brick & mortar stores like Pete's Music Center in Yuba City that need a hand - great staff focused on local music education.

The Strum Shop is a wonderful music shop in Roseville with a very active series of classes and performances. We played a concert there surrounded by banjos and ukuleles. Ukuleles have exploded in popularity.
 2013 - 2014
"Daniel Roest was kind enough to bring me out to Northern California recently as he often does with many fine artists. He is a true feather in the cap for any community he touches and is a prime example of how the arts are destined to live on through individuals like him who are willing to selflessly give their time and effort to promote music through education and performances.

Professional, organized and easy to work with, Daniel is a terrific player and relaxed performer. I look forward to working with him again in the future."

—Richard Gilewitz
I loved working with  multi-talented host-presenter-guitarist and high end guitar shop owner Stevie Coyle, who produced a wonderful concert or us at his high-end Mighty Fine Guitars in Lafayette, CA.
If you look closely at the guitar I'm holding, you'll notice it is not the Matsuoka I've had since 1973, but a new guitar just made in Fort Bragg by Brian Burns. I met him through my old teacher Robert Burns, no relation. It has very special qualities, and he was overjoyed I had played it in concerts and talked up his work. It's No. 24, and he calls it "Grandpop's guitar." He and his wife had these bookshelves her dad built that they carried from house to house for decades, and he asked her recently if he could use the wood for guitar tops - and it worked out wonderfully. There are even two finishing nail holes visible on the face, which he plugged neatly. On the bell curve of luthier styles from intuitive to scientific, Brian would be on the scientific, measure-everything-and-collect-data end of the spectrum. Here's his video discussing guitar building.
A big part of the success of our shows was the sound we wrangled out of the various PA systems we used, and Richard is very, very good at it. Pictured above in Lincoln is our basic stage setup - my AT 3031 condenser mic in the center, my Brian Burns No. 24 on the right and his Rod Shenk 12-string on the left. On the floor, he used an LR Baggs Venue and a Roland delay pedal. Also showing is a  floor monitor and my Zoom H2 recorder.

In April 2016 I got to do a concert at UC Davis immediately before Sharon Isbin's concert with the New York Chamber Soloists at 8pm. I traded solos with jazz guitarist Steve Homan. During the day I assisted with Sharon's sound check, playing onstage as she walked around the 1200-seat auditorium checking volume and tone.
What fun my brothers Mark and Franklin and I had in April! Biking, canoeing and flying, going to a fine furniture makers exhibition in Folsom (below), seeing their nephew Craig plus just hanging out. Next April we'll go down to Ojai for a concert I'm sharing with Dr. Gregory Newton.
Here's a shot from the April 2016 SGS meeting at Sac Prep Music Academy's new location at the The Clara in Midtown - Anatoliy Yevsyukov brought his Russian-speaking guitar students to perform.
Francesca and I were in Sacramento at Rosemont High School in March, filling in for a scheduled artist who couldn't make it on an early Monday morning. Jumping into performing and teaching with short one day's notice happens more than you'd think!
I'm President and Artistic Director of the Sacramento Guitar Society, a job that has joys and challenges. Among the joys are interacting with and supporting some of the top guitarists in the world and those on the way up. Just a few from 2015-16:
Arthur Dente
Eliot Fisk
George Sakellariou
Michael Chapdelaine
Steve Homan
At the Sierra Nevada Fine Furniture Makers Guild exhibition in Folsom, my son Craig with two of his four uncles, Franklin (always the tallest in the family) and Mark.
